Environmental degradation is also due to uncontrolled consumption of natural resources, including water.
In the future, pollution, climate change and drought threaten this precious natural treasure.
Our society must set the goal of carrying out engineering projects capable of guaranteeing the collection and maintenance of water, minimizing the environmental impact and improving the quality, distribution and rational use of this natural asset.
In the recent years, the number of projects for the construction of agricultural tanks and artificial snow basins has been spreading. Agriculture and ski slopes require the consumption of considerable quantities of water and therefore in the future, thinking about a more sustainable world, these works are designed for accumulating water when it is in excess and then putting it back into circulation when needed.
Artificial basins are characterized by a bottom and walls which must necessarily be waterproofed, as the system must be able to contain significant quantities of water. For these works it is essential to define systems that are able to protect the waterproofing layer.
Depending on the type of scheduled coating, it is necessary to identify the most suitable protection system.
A possible workable solution is the following:
• geotextile of suitable weight placed in the lower part of the waterproofing layer;
• waterproofing layer
• non-woven geotextile placed in the upper part of the waterproofing layer;
• three-dimensional anti-erosion geomat.
The function of the anti-erosion layer is essentially to guarantee greater stability to the final covering soil, as regards the dry part of the bank, and to protect the waterproofing package as regards the submerged part.
