Applications:

RAILWAY WORKS

The nonwoven geotextiles GEO have different applications in railway works. In the construction of ballasted railway lines GEO is placed between the ballast and the subsoil , in order to keep the two materials separated. Without the use of geotextiles, the dynamic loads generated by train traffic have as consequence the pollution of ballast by fine soil particles, especially in the case of soft saturated soils. In this way, the original mechanical characteristics of ballast change with a relative short time, causing a progressive deformation of the track structure. Expensive maintenance operations are therefore necessary. Using GEO geotextiles the service life of railway line is considerably extended, with the advantage of higher railway track safety and cost saving.

GEO can be also used in the renewal of existing railway lines, where the polluted ballast is replaced by new clean aggregates; GEO is laid as separation and filtration layer between new ballast and the subsoil.

In a different typology of construction the ballast is placed on a compacted fill material layer, which is built on the in-situ soil. In this case the nonwoven geotextile GEO can be placed between the natural soil and the compacted layer; GEO performs the separation and filtration function as well as the drainage function, conveying the pore water to the water collection system at the sides of railway track.

GEO is also used to wrap the dry granular layers placed at the base of the embankments, against capillary rise.

In the new ballastless track lines, GEO is also used as separation and protection interlayer between the track slabs and the concrete foundation below.
